What we offer:

At the Newcastle East Study Centre we aim to help children gain confidence and succeed in Maths and English.

Courses are tailored to suit the individual ability and learning style of your child and are based on and compliment the school curriculum.

Students are school age children who need to improve or accelerate their maths and or english skills.

All ages and abilities are welcome.  As a general rule the earlier your child starts the better.

What happens in class?

On arrival at class students are greeted by the tutor and helped to swap their completed homework for new homework and collect their class work for the day.

Any issues a child or parent has are noted and discussed at class or by phone later.  Parents are expected to have marked the homework and we do provide answer books.

Students typically spend 20-30 minutes in class or a little longer if they are doing two subjects.  Once a student has completed their work and it has been marked they leave the session.

Students starting a new topic or those that are having difficulty will receive one to one tuition.  Unlike a traditional tutor, this one to one tuition is reinforced with a weekly programme of regular homework.

Independent learning is encouraged.  All students are aware that sympathetic help is always available and that rather than being a sign of failure an error is always seen as a learning opportunity.

Class Ethos:

We aim to create a calm welcoming atmosphere in class.  We talk to every child while they are in the classroom and friendly advice and help is given by the tutor.

Personal organisation and consideration for others is encouraged.  Students are expected to bring a sharp pencil to class and to do their work quietly, without distracting others.

However there is a gentle buzz of conversation – friendships are formed here. We take our studies   seriously – but we enjoy ourselves at the same time.  Children arrive and leave with a smile.

Communication with Parents:

Following an initial assessment your child will attend the tuition centre in Benton, Newcastle upon Tyne, usually once a week.  Students also complete weekly homework tasks which reinforce what they have met in class.  Progress is regularly assessed and the assessment is discussed with you and your child.

We lay great emphasis on effective communication with students and parents and on putting enjoyment back into Maths and English.  First Class Learning has an excellent record of improvement in children’s performance at school and SAT and Exam success.

Children learning to succeed

First Class Learning Within The Education Industry

When it comes to the education of our children, whether in primary school or in secondary school, getting extra help with school work is becoming more and more popular throughout England, Scotland and Wales. So how do parents choose between the various options of private tutor, home tutoring service or after school classes which are available? Parents and children today lead busy lives so our choices about the type of tuition and other after school clubs must include not only what may be effective but also what fits around our lifestyle.

First Class Learning Versus Home Private Tuition And Tutoring Services

There are many organisations and individual tutors throughout England, Scotland and Wales that offer private tuition in your home or at a learning centre.

With a private tutor or tutors from home tutoring services, the tutor will visit your home for usually an hourly tuition session each week to help your child with some difficulty with school work. With most tutors the tutoring session is split between the tutor talking about what the student is going to study then perhaps demonstration of a technique, and then the student carries out an exercise from a book. Little of the hour is taken up in concentrated learning.

Rather than take the home tuition route, we at First Class Learning use diagnostics to ensure that we, the parents and the student know precisely the underlying cause of the learning difficulty. A programme of study is then constructed around the identified needs of the student. Students visit a centre, away from home distractions, and carry out a piece of concentrated study. Work is then immediately marked and corrected and the student takes away homework to reinforce the learning that has taken place in class. Progress is carefully monitored using weekly scoring and feedback. Success is achieved by small, attainable steps.

First Class Learning Versus Buying Books, Educational Software And DVDs

Educational resources in a range of subjects, from core subjects like maths and English to astronomy and touch-typing, are available in supermarkets, high street shops or from the Internet. These range from books, activity packs, DVDs, CDs, and educational software packages.

With these resources, the parent has to decide what is appropriate to meet the specific learning needs of their child, matching product to school work, deciding how and when it will be utilised and then supervise the learning at home.

First Class Learning provides a structured learning experience for your child in maths and English. Work is provided to meet the needs of each individual by an experienced subject specialist who can talk to your child about the problems they may be facing.

The First Class Learning Mathematics Programme

The First Class Learning Mathematics Programme is structured to meet the needs of primary and secondary school children specifically in the UK. Topics include:

  • Number (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division as well as fractions, percentages and decimals)
  • Algebra
  • Shape, space and measure
  • Handling Data

Subject content matches that used in school and is derived from The National Curriculum for England and Wales and the 5-14 Programme for Scotland.

The First Class Learning English Programme

The First Class Learning English Programme is a skills based programme structured to meet the needs of primary and secondary school children specifically in the UK and incorporates the successful Beat Dyslexia series. This gives a structured, multi-sensory approach, which includes:

  • Phonics
  • Learning to reading
  • Spelling and handwriting
  • English comprehension

Essentially a synthetic phonics programme, the First Class Learning English programme is consistent with the forthcoming changes in the teaching of reading in schools in England.
