Students’ commitment to education – their own and that of children in some of the poorest parts of Africa – has been celebrated at a special ceremony at the Middlesbrough First Class Learning Centre in Acklam.
Students from all over Teesside who study FCL English and Maths with tutors Chris and Pat Jones at the Middlesbrough Centre were joined by pupils of St Joseph’s Primary School, who use FCL Maths at their successful and popular morning maths club. All the students were rewarded for their commitment, improvement at school and independent learning skills.
The children received their certificates and Christmas gifts from Mrs Marie Taylor, Head of Teaching and Learning at Middlesbrough College. Mrs Taylor was enormously impressed by all she saw at the tuition centre, and spoke of the long term benefits of developing strong numeracy and literacy skills.
A special part of the event this year was the presentation of a cheque to the Acklam Grange Africa Project, an inspiring educational project in which students of FCL Middlesbrough have been and are involved. This fundraising project was set up by the pupils, staff, parents and friends of Acklam Grange School Middlesbrough. It has brought together young people from Africa and Teesside, and has made a huge impact on the lives of many children and families in third-world areas of Kenya and Tanzania. The Mayor of Hammersmith and Fulham opened the doors to the new First Class Learning this term, with scores of families flocking to the open day to discover more about the new extra-tuition format sweeping the nation.
First Class Learning Olympia initially opened as a summer school before term time began, with this open day marking the beginning of a fully fledged maths and English tuition service for children of all ages. The centre managers and tutors, Jane Li and Andrew Reid, organised the event which gave demonstrations of the study aids and exhibited examples of students’ work completed during the summer. Children were also entertained by a range of activities at hand, including face painters, balloon artists and arts and crafts instruction.
The event proved a great success with many parents applying to enrol their children for tuition on the day. The Mayor, Cllr Adronie Alford was also impressed by the vision of the two tutors and its realisation after months of planning.
She said,
“I’m delighted to be here at the open day and would like to congratulate you both on making this happen. I think it’s a marvellous idea – well done for bringing something back to the borough. It is really good of you to give back to the community – thank you so much and I wish you the very best of success.”
First Class Learning Olympia is open every Wednesday from 4-6pm with parents and children free to drop in. Children are given class work with daily homework set in order to build upon the topic established in class. The daily homework tasks fit easily into pupils’ schedules – developing skills, providing practice and ensuring the children expand their knowledge and learning techniques. The programmes have received rave reviews nationwide with more than 60 centres now open, as well as a number of primary and secondary schools employing the educational service across the country.
