First Class Learning promotes independent learning and study skills, so that your child gains the confidence to tackle new concepts

Our centre

Welcome to the Burnham-on-sea First Class Learning Centre. Rachel Holdom, centre manager, has been running highly successful after-school maths and English classes for over 20 years (12 years Kumon). The FCL programme follows the UK National Curriculum and supports children in the local community with both maths and English tuition.

Students of all ages attend our study centre held at The King Alfred School 6th Form Centre in Burnham and Highbridge on a Wednesday for around 30 minutes per subject. We cater for learners from reception in primary and preparing for SATS, through to secondary school and the GCSE exams. The FCL programme is also being run in many schools throughout the UK.

Our expert tutors support your child's learning in maths, English or both subjects together in order to help with their school studies, build confidence and develop independent learning skills, something that is extremely important in today's busy classrooms in schools.

Our English and maths programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practise, really does make a huge difference.

Subjects

From the basics of reading, writing and spelling to comprehension and creative writing skills, the First Class Learning English Programme follows principles that make it ideal for all learners, whether primary or secondary. Drawing on a variety of imaginative materials, the programme develops the key skills that allow the learner to read and write fluently, confidently and with enjoyment.

The First Class Learning Maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school Mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum.

How it works

One of our First Class Learning tutors will meet with you to discuss your child. They will then sit down with your child and complete an assessment to determine which path is most suitable for them. Once we have established your child’s needs, we will put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child’s learning.

If you feel happy with our plan and that we are the best option for you and your child, they will then be able to start attending regular classes at the centre. In these classes they will complete a short piece of work which will be marked, returned and discussed with the tutor, who will give them a detailed programme of homework to be completed before the next class.

Your next steps

If First Class Learning is the right fit for you and your child, and you would like to arrange an assessment, please contact your local Centre Manager. They will inform you on how your child can become one of the growing number of students in the UK enjoying success with First Class Learning.
