Welcome to the Glastonbury

First Class Learning Study Centre for Maths and English Tuition

Who are we?

Rachel has run a popular (50 children) after-school Maths and English centre in Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea for the last 13 years and, because of demand, has now opened a centre here in Glastonbury.

How does it work?

Using a combination of carefully structured worksheets and textbooks, the First Class Learning programme will take your child from the basics of Maths and/or English through to the more demanding aspects of school work.  FCL was developed by a British team of educationalists specifically to support the National Curriculum in England and Wales (and the Scottish equivalent).

FCL is suitable for children of all abilities, and all ages from pre-school to teens.  As a general rule, the earlier the child starts the better.  A child can study either or both subjects.

Before you decide to enrol your child with First Class Learning, she/he will be assessed by the Centre Manager in your own home.  (There is no charge for the visit, and no commitment at that stage.)  This assessment will help to determine his/her specific needs and ensure a suitable starting point in the course if you subsequently decide to join.

If your child enrols, at each visit to the Study Centre he/she will be given a programme of homework that should be completed before the next class.  Even in one subject, there may be homework on two different topics.  All students should look upon the homework they receive as a weekly task – not a daily grind!  There is flexibility – a child may choose to do a small amount each day, or in two or three sessions over the course of the week.

Sympathetic one-to-one help is always available in the Centre.

 Where are we?

The Centre operates in St Dunstan's Community School and Arts College , where there is ample free parking.

Fees

Fees are just £50/month for the first child doing one subject, plus a one-off £15 registration fee.  Fees for a second subject, or for any other sibling living in the same household, is reduced to £40/month, with no further registration fee.

If you feel that your child could benefit, please call and ask for an information pack, or arrange for an assessment.

TESTIMONIALS

"I became very worried when my daughter Lottie fell behind at school. I wanted to support her but did not know how. I had tried to do extra work at home with her with school books and information downloaded from the internet, however, I could not get her to do this with me. I arranged a visit from Somerset Learning and Rachel came to our home and assessed Lottie's Maths and English, which were indeed behind. In Maths she was writing most of her numbers incorrectly and her reading and writing skills were also behind. After just a few short weeks she was writing her number perfectly and has been doing daily Maths and English now for over a year. After visiting Lottie's primary school recently, I was told by her teacher that Lottie's reading and writing had improved at a much quicker rate than would have been expected and that her Maths is now up to speed. I have noticed that Lottie is much more confident than she used to be and she was praised in her assembly recently by the headmaster for 'amazing maths'. I used to worry a lot about my daughter's school work because I fell behind at primary school myself with Maths and know stressful it can be. All children learn at different rates, indeed I caught up later on,  however, I think that it makes school life a lot more interesting and enjoyable for children if they are able to fully take part in lessons and keep up with the other kids. I see the money that I pay for this extra tuition as an insurance policy, to support my child at the times she does fall behind, to give her something extra if she ever finds herself ahead of the pack and to ensure that she has all the support I can possibly give her. "

"Tom has improved hugely in Maths since being with FCL.  His target grade was a Grade E at GCSE, with the help of FCL Tom achieved a C grade in his first GCSE module".

"My older son (Yr 5) commented 6 weeks into his new school: "I'm glad I do Firstclass Learning, the practice shows in my maths. When I first came to this school, I used to nearly beat the best boy in this class, now I beat him all the time.

My younger son (Yr 2): His teacher commented after the first week back at school: "I don't know what he's been doing, but he is the only one to hit the ground running! He seems to remember what we did last year!"

"My daughter is know so confident in her maths class. She used to hate the subject.  Recently it was parents evening and in her maths book she wrote 'I love maths!!' Fantastic!"
