Harrow Kenton
First Class Learning Study Centre
for Maths and English Tuition
Welcome to the Kenton Study Centre
Who we are:
My name is Jaymini Bhattacharya and I am the centre manager for the Harrow Kenton First Class Learning Study Centre at St John's United Reformed Church.
The aim of my centres at both Harrow Weald and Kenton is to support students in the local community with both Maths tuition and English tuition. Students of all ages attend the Harrow Kenton centre from Early Years, Key stage 1, Key stage 2, Key stage 3 and all the way through to children studying GCSEs.
Whether your child is having problems with schoolwork, or on the contrary, not finding school enough of a challenge, the First Class learning Maths courses and English courses will help them to realise their full potential. Whatever your child's age or ability, First Class Learning will maximise their potential with a learning programme that is tailored to their individual needs.
Assessment
Before you decide to enrol your child with First Class Learning, she/he will be assessed. The assessment will help me to determine his/her specific needs and ensure a suitable starting point in the course if you subsequently decide to join.
Using a combination of carefully structured worksheets and textbooks, I will devise a programme specifically for your child, to take him or her from the basics of Maths and/or English through to the more demanding aspects of school work.
The Study Centre
Once enrolled, your child will attend the Study Centre once a week during the school term. Whilst there, he/she will complete a short piece of maths and/or English which will be marked and returned. Your child will have the opportunity to discuss his or her work with us before leaving. Each visit to the Study Centre should take between 25 and 30 minutes, or a little longer if a student is studying two subjects.
At the Study Centre, we will carry out regular assessments of your child's progress, the results of which will be shared with you, to give you a clear picture of your child's progress.
Your child will be encouraged to take the initiative in tackling problems and tasks. Guidance and assistance will of course, be given when required, but at First Class Learning, we believe that the ability to think independently in applying learned knowledge, is as important as the course. Your child will not be 'taught' in the traditional sense; rather, they will learn how to learn and to learn how to succeed.
Homework
At each visit to the Study Centre he/she will be given a programme of homework that should be completed before the next class. Even in one subject, there may be homework on two different topics. All students should look upon the homework they receive as a weekly task – not a daily grind! There is flexibility – a child may choose to do a small amount each day, or in two or three sessions over the course of the week.
The flexibility of the programme allows homework to be fitted in with all the other activities that are going on in your child's life. Students are neither required to meet a time criterion in order to demonstrate mastery of the First Class Learning worksheets, or to repeat the same work endlessly. Your child will never become bored; as the modular nature of the programme allows us to not only vary the type of work, but to also cover the entire National Curriculum. At First Class Learning, we support your child's learning with the aim of making their school studies easier.
Each child is also given a handbook. This enables the child to check their own work and the parents to be able to see what progress is made every step of the way. With the use of these handbooks, First Class Learning aims to build confidence in children and develop their independent learning ability. Our students progress a step at a time, moving on only after they have understood and mastered a topic.
Class Ethos
We aim to create a calm welcoming atmosphere in class. We talk to every student whilst they are in the classroom and they can also turn to our trained staff for friendly advice and help.
First Class Learning is a long term programme and students often stay with us for a number of years. Friendships are formed here. We take our studies seriously – but we enjoy ourselves at the same time. Children arrive and leave with a smile.
NB: Children remain the responsibility of parents whilst at the centre.
