Welcome to Harrow Town First Class Learning Centre for Maths, English and Science Tuition

What makes a child self-assured and self-determined?

"If a child lives with criticism..........he learns to condemn.
If a child lives with encouragement .......... he learns to be confident."

A fundamental element of our ethos at First Class Learning is that mistakes are not failures, but learning opportunities. When a child has corrections to do, my first question is, “Can you see where you went wrong?” More often than not, the child is able to spot their error and explain the correct method.   In doing so, they clarify it in their own mind, consolidating their learning. Encouraging children to use corrections in this way, without censuring them, makes them less afraid to make a mistake, and makes them more willing to have a go themselves, instead of immediately turning to an adult for help.  Thus they grow into confident, independent learners.

These simple principles can make the difference between failure and success, between dependence and independence, between fear and confidence.

Who runs the centre?

My name is Divya Nakarja. I am a qualifi ed teacher and have a vast experience of teaching students in London schools. My aim is to deliver a good teaching service to the local community. I have been tutoring students in English, Maths and Science upto GCSE and A level Biology for the last 7 years.

Where is the centre?

The Harrow Town First Class Learning Centre is located at St Peter's Church, Sumner Road, Harrow. The class is held in the upstairs church hall. There is plenty of parking space (drive via Colbeck Road) and a waiting area for parents/guardians.

Who we are:

First Class Learning (FCL) is the leading after-school Maths and English study programme based on the National School Curriculum. FCL Maths and English programme is tailored to suit the individual ability and learning style of your child. FCL has been designed by a British team of educationalists and is endorsed by the Dyspraxia Foundaton.

We aim to build confidence in children and develop their independent learning ability to succeed in Maths and English. Children of all abilities thrive in the First Class Learning centre as our programmes are individualised to their specific needs. We welcome students of an age between 4 and 16 years old. FCL is suitable for children of all abilities, but as a general rule the earlier your child starts the better.

How does it work?

Before your child commences study with us at the Harrowtown centre, she/he will be assessed in order to determine his/her specific needs and ensure a suitable starting point in the course.  Once your child enrols, he/she will attend the study centre on a regular basis. Whilst there he/she will complete a short piece of work work which will be marked and returned. Your child have an opportunity to discuss about her work before he/she leaves the class. Each visit to the centre should take approximately 30 - 40 mins per subject.

Using a combination of carefully structured worksheets and textbooks, we will devise a programme specifically for your child, to take him or her from the basics of numeracy and literacy skills through to the more demanding aspects of school work.

Homework

At each visit to the Study Centre he/she will be given a programme of homework that should be completed before the next class.  Even in one subject, there may be homework on two different topics.  All students should look upon the homework they receive as a weekly task – not a daily grind!  There is flexibility – a child may choose to do a small amount each day, or in two or three sessions over the course of the week.

Your child never become bored, as the modular nature of the programme allows us not only vary the type of work without repeating the same type of work, but to also cover the entire National Curriculum

What the parents say about their Learning Experience at HarrowTown First Class Learning:

"My son Oscar, who is currently in Yr 6 was so scared of Maths that even doing simple additions/subtractions took him ages to do. When he was assessed (in September 2011) by the First Class learning Centre Manager at Harrowtown,he was able to add and subtract numbers involving one digit, but since then, he can now confidently tackle 2 digit numbers, learnt all the times tables and other numerical such as time and simple fractions. He has gained lots of confidence in Maths.

I have now also joined my second son for both English and Maths; he requires more challenge which  is also catered for at the Harrowtown First Class learning Centre!"

Vatsal Patel, Yr 3 student stressed at the open day of the centre " I found English a very difficult subject but since joing the HarrowTown First Class learning, I not only enjoy learning English but my confidence in speaking has greatly improved. This is because my teacher, Mrs Nakarja teaches me well."

SATs/GCSE Revision

For those students who are taking external maths exams I am able to tutor for exam revision based on a series of books which focus on problem solving skills.  These books are commercially printed and designed for use in schools. The exercises would also identify areas which require further practice and we would use the worksheets for this. This process might involve extra tuition during class so students might have to stay in the class for longer than usual. The students studying the English programme will be using materials designed to practise exam-type questions but specific exam practice will also be available to them.

We also have an exciting English module, Writing Skills, which provides students with structured, supported practice to enhance their performance in the SATs Writing tests. It also includes useful tips for students tackling these exams.

Help with schoolwork

Don’t forget that we are always happy to help children with their schoolwork. All we ask is that you give us some notice and bring the relevant work (including textbooks) to the class. The best times to attend in these circumstances are during the first or last half hour of the class.
