Who are we?

Welcome to the Kirby Muxloe First Class Learning Centre, run by Helen Coombs and Diana Harrold.
Both of us are very experienced teachers. We have worked with classes, small groups and taught on a one-to one basis. Through our work in schools, we recognise the value of further consolidation of maths and literacy skills, in helping a child to achieve their potential. The First Class Learning materials, enable this to happen, complementing the work done in schools and reinforcing learning. The programme was developed by a British team of Educationalists to support the National Curriculum.
We support students in the Kirby Muxloe area with both English and Maths tuition. Students of all abilities, aged between 6 and 14 are welcome. First Class Learning aims to build confidence in children and develop their independent learning ability. Our students progress a step at a time, moving on only after they have understood and mastered a topic.
At First Class Learning we believe in 1% steps to 100% success.
First Class Learning is a long term programme and students often stay with us for a number of years. At First Class Learning, we support your child's learning with the aim of making their school studies easier. Students can receive Maths tuition or English tuition or can study both subjects together.
How does it work?
Initial Assessment
Before enrolling, students have an individual assessment, which will inform the centre managers about the appropriate starting point on the programme. There is no charge, and no commitment at this stage.
The individual programme
Using a combination of carefully structured worksheets and textbooks, we will devise a programme specifically for your child, to take him or her from the basics of Maths and/or English through to the more demanding aspects of school work.
In the class
Students attend the class each week for 20-30 minutes, a little longer for two subjects. Students complete work while in class. The work in class introduces the work for the week.
Homework
Students are given homework that should be completed before the next class. There is flexibility – a child may choose to do a small amount each day, or in two or three sessions over the course of the week. This work is key to ensuring the students progress, as it provides constant consolidation of their skills.
What do parents and students say?
First Class Learning is a great way of helping my child with the Maths and English she is struggling with at school. I would encourage parents whose child is falling behind to go down this route. Alex has certainly improved in both subjects. Mrs Allwood (Parent)
When I first came I didn't like Maths. I am finding it really good. Now I love it. Molly (aged 8)
Jack was not keen to start on this learning scheme, but after being assessed by Di, he felt positive and knew that people were there to help him. The work doesn't take too long to do, so it is manageable, and Jack has made steady progress.
On his last parents' evening his teacher told me how much more confident at Maths he is, and that he is now capable of sitting the SATS test, which he wasn't before. Mrs Hill (Parent)
