Where is the centre?

On Tuesdays and Fridays the centre runs at St Chad's Church House, which is located directly opposite Abbey Lane Primary School.  There are parking bays directly outside the centre and plenty of additional parking on the adjacent Linden Avenue. Students can attend either once or twice a week and will need to be at the centre for approximately 30 minutes for each subject studied.

There is also a new Monday class based in Totley.

What happens at the centre?

Students arrive at the centre with the previous week's completed homework and will first of all hand this in and also collect the new homework for the following week.  Students will then complete a piece of work or  assessment in class which will take 10 to 20 minutes and this will be marked with a member of staff. Assistants are always on hand to help students and answer any questions they have about any of the worksheets set.  Once the work is marked students complete any corrections so that they learn from any mistakes made.  Our philosophy is that mistakes are simply learning opportunities and the atmosphere in the centre is always one of encouragement and praise. Once work is finished, students have the opportunity to discuss their week's progress with me and then they receive reward stamps, which can be collected and exchanged for small prizes.

Sympathetic one-to-one help is always available in the Centre.

What happens at home?

Once your child enrols, at each visit to the Study Centre he/she will be given a programme of homework that should be completed before the next class.  Even in one subject, there may be homework on two different topics.  All students should look upon the homework they receive as a weekly task. There is flexibility so that a student may choose to do a small amount each day, or in two or three sessions over the course of the week.

Who can benefit?

First Class Learning programmes are available for students of all ages, from those in early years to children studying for GCSEs. First Class Learning aims to build confidence in children and develop their independent learning ability. Children of all abilities thrive in First Class Learning centres as the programmes are individualised to their specific needs.

First Class Learning study programmes

Tuition is based on the First Class Learning programmes which were designed in the UK to support the National Curriculum. This means that topics are introduced in the same order and studied to the same depth as they are in school.  The major focus is on the core basic skills but a wider range of maths topics are also covered.  Students working towards KS2 SATs and GCSE have the opportunity to improve their skills by trying practice papers in class where help is available from the centre staff. The English programme incorporates regular handwriting practice and the early stages of the English programme are based on the synthetic phonics programme which is used in schools. Later stages include free/creative writing as well as reading, comprehension, grammar and spelling.

First Class Learning is a long term study programme and can support students throughout their school career.  We aim to make students'  school studies easier and enable them to reach their full potential at school.  Students can receive maths, English or science tuition or can study any combination of subjects together.

Student Success Stories

March 2012: It was a double success story for First Class Learning students Ria and Anya Saini when within a week of each other both sisters were moved up a maths group at school!  Anya is delighted to be in the top maths group in her class and Ria reported passing her first Y8 school maths exam with flying colours.

How do I enrol my child?

Before your child can join the First Class Learning classes you will need to book an individual enrolment session where she/he will be assessed by the Centre Manager to work out the correct start point on the study programme. A free two week trial is currently available to all new students.

Fees are: First student/subject £50, second student/subject £40 and third and subsequent students/subjects £30.  No registration fee is chargeable.
