Where is the centre?
The new Monday centre is located at Totley All Saints Church Hall, which is adjacent to Totley Primary School. The church hall has its own parking area and there is a comfortable parents' waiting area in the central lobby. Students can attend weekly and will need to be at the centre for approximately 30 minutes per subject studied.
There are also classes on Tuesday and Friday at Beauchief.
What happens at the centre?
Students arrive at the centre with the previous week's completed homework and will hand this in and also collect the new homework for the following week. Students will complete a piece of work or assessment in class which will take 10 to 20 minutes and this will be marked with a member of staff. Students then complete any corrections so that they learn from any mistakes made. Our philosophy is that mistakes are simply learning opportunities and the atmosphere in the centre is always one of encouragement and praise. The worksheets are carefully designed to ensure smooth progress and the accompanying handbooks will introduce any new concepts but our assistants are always on hand to give explanations and assistance where required. Once work is finished, students have the opportunity to discuss their week's progress with me and then they receive stickers/stamps which can be collected and exchanged for small prizes.
Sympathetic one-to-one help is always available in the Centre.
What happens at home?
Once your child enrols, at each visit to the Study Centre he/she will be given a programme of homework that should be completed before the next class. Even in one subject, there may be homework on two different topics. All students should look upon the homework they receive as a weekly task. There is flexibility so that a student may choose to do a small amount each day, or in two or three sessions over the course of the week.
Who can benefit?
First Class Learning programmes are available for students of all ages, from those in early years to children studying for GCSEs. First Class Learning aims to build confidence in children and develop their independent learning ability. Children of all abilities thrive in First Class Learning centres as the programmes are individualised to their specific needs.
First Class Learning study programmes
Tuition is based on the First Class Learning programmes which were designed in the UK to support the National Curriculum. This means that topics are introduced in the same order and studied to the same depth as they are in school. The major focus is on the core basic skills but a wider range of maths topics are also covered. The necessary practice is built into the programmes so that repetition of worksheets is rarely necessary and more able students are fast-tracked. The English programme incorporates regular handwriting practice with cursive handwriting introduced from the start. The early stages of the English programme are based on the synthetic phonics programme which is used in schools. Later stages include free writing as well as reading, comprehension, grammar, handwriting and spelling.
First Class Learning is a long term study programme and can support students throughout their school career. We aim to make students' school studies easier and enable them to reach their full potential at school. To ensure exam success, specific revision programmes are available for SATs and GCSE. Students can receive maths, English or science tuition or can study any combination of subjects together.
How do I enrol my child?
Before your child can join the First Class Learning classes you will need to book an individual enrolment session where she/he will be assessed by the Centre Manager to work out the correct start point on the study programme. A free two week trial is currently available to all new students.
Fees are: £50 per month for the first student/subject, £40 per month for the second student/subject and £30 per month for the third and subsequent students/subjects.
