Welcome to The Upminster First Class Learning Study Centre
Whether you are looking for tuition because your child is having problems with schoolwork, or on the contrary, not finding school enough of a challenge, the First Class learning maths and English courses will provide the answer. Whatever your child's age or ability, First Class Learning will maximise their potential with a learning programme that is tailored to their individual needs.
Before your child commences study with us in Upminster, he/she will be assessed in order to determine their specific needs and ensure a suitable starting point on the course.
The Study Centre
A demand for Saturday morning classes in Upminster grew, following the succesful introduction of (maths) breakfast clubs in local primary schools. These early-morning classes have been running for over a year now in three local schools, and a number of parents - who have been very pleased with the progress their children have made in numeracy at breakfast clubs - asked for the literacy programme to be also made available. Older siblings attending local secondary schools now also have the opportunity to study.
Once enrolled, your child will attend the Study Centre on a regular basis. Whilst there, he/she will complete a short piece of maths and/or English which will be marked and returned. Your child will have the opportunity to discuss his or her work with us before leaving. Each visit to the Study Centre should take between 20 and 30 minutes, or a little longer if a student is studying both maths and English. There are also other educational activities for the younger students, who are encouraged to spend some time on the games table after studying.
At the Study Centre, we will carry out regular assessments of your child's progress, the results of which will be shared with you, to give you a clear picture of your child's progress.
Your child will be encouraged to take the initiative in tackling problems and tasks. Guidance and assistance will of course, be given when required, but at First Class Learning, we believe that the ability to think independently in applying learned knowledge, is as important as the course. Your child will not be 'taught' in the traditional sense; rather, they will learn how to learn and to learn how to succeed.
Homework
At each visit to the Study Centre, your child will be given a detailed programme of homework that should be completed before the next class. All students should look upon the homework they receive as a weekly task - not a daily grind! They may choose to do a small amount each day, or in two or three sessions over the course of the week. Whilst it is hoped that all work set should be completed within the week, it really isn't a problem if some worksheets don't get done for whatever reason - there's always next week!
The flexibility of the programme allows homework to be fitted in with all the other activities that are going on in your child's life. Students are neither required to meet a time criterion in order to demonstrate mastery of the First Class Learning worksheets, or to repeat the same work endlessly. Your child will never become bored, as the modular nature of the programme allows us to not only vary the type of work, but to also cover the entire National Curriculum.
We don't have any 'no-go areas' at First Class Learning!
Class Ethos
We aim to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere in class. We talk to every child while they are in the classroom, and they are soon made aware that they can quickly turn to our qualified teachers for friendly advice and help.
Friendships are formed here. We take our studies seriously - but we enjoy ourselves at the same time. Children arrive and leave with a smile - indeed, there may be occasions when you'll need to insist that your child leaves!
The class has an excellent record of improvement in children's performance at school and exam success, and we are proud of the fact that nearly all our students come from the personal recommendation of parents and teachers.
Fees
Fees are £50 per calendar month for single-subject and £80 per month for dual-subject, with discounts available for siblings. There is also a one-off £20 registration fee.
