Welcome to the Watford First Class Learning Centre for Maths, English and 11 Plus Tuition
Lesson 1 - for parents!
"If a child lives with criticism..........he learns to condemn.
If a child lives with encouragement .......... he learns to be confident."
A fundamental element of our ethos at First Class Learning is that mistakes are not failures, but learning opportunities. When a child has corrections to do, my first question is, “Can you see where you went wrong?” More often than not, the child is able to spot their error and explain the correct method. In doing so, they clarify it in their own mind, consolidating their learning. Encouraging children to use corrections in this way, without censuring them, makes them less afraid to make a mistake, and makes them more willing to have a go themselves, instead of immediately turning to an adult for help. Thus they grow into confident, independent learners.
These simple principles can make the difference between failure and success, between dependence and independence, between fear and confidence.
Hello and welcome to the Watford First Class Learning Centre
I hope you enjoyed your first lesson! My name is Puja Saujani and I am the Director of Education at First Class Learning Watford. I work alongside the centre manager to ensure your children get the most out of our learning programmes. I am a qualified Maths Teacher with several years teaching experience gained both at at a London school with over 1000 students, summer school and also through my role as a private maths and english tutor to children of all ages. My particular focus has been on raising pass rates and preparing children for Sats, 11+, GCSEs and entrance exams. My aim now is to work with your children to help them realise their full potential. I have provided some information below to help you gain a better understanding of the First Class Learning programme and what it offers.

Where is the centre?
The Watford First Class Learning Centre is located at The Newton Price Centre, Grosvenor Road, Watford WD17 2QT. The Centre is adjacent to Central Primary School and directly opposite the Harlequin Shopping Centre which can be accessed safely via the underpass. Further information about the venue can be found at http://www.newtonprice.org

Watford Junction and Watford High Street train/tube stations are both within 5 minutes walking distance. Car parking is available onsite and in the shopping centre. There is also a waiting room where parents can relax while their children are learning. However many parents prefer to take the opportunity to go shopping or grab a coffee, in one of the many shops located within just 2 minutes from the Centre.
Who we are:
First Class Learning (FCL) is the leading after-school Maths,English and Eleven Plus study programme based on the National School Curriculum. The FCL Maths and English programme is tailored to suit the individual ability and learning style of your child. FCL has been designed by a British team of educationalists and is supported by the Dyspraxia Foundaton.
We aim to build confidence in children and develop their independent learning ability to succeed in Maths and English. Children of all abilities thrive in the First Class Learning centre as our programmes are individualised to their specific needs. We welcome students of ages 4 to 16 years old. FCL is suitable for children of all abilities, but as a general rule the earlier your child starts the better.

How does it work?
Before your child commences study with us at the Watford centre, they will be assessed in order to determine their specific needs and ensure a suitable starting point in the course. Once your child enrolls, they will attend the study centre on a regular basis. Whilst there they will complete a short piece of work which will be marked and returned. Your child will have an opportunity to discuss their work before they leave the class. Each visit to the centre should take approximately 30 - 40 mins per subject.
Using a combination of carefully structured worksheets and textbooks, we will devise a programme specifically for your child, to take them from the basics of numeracy and literacy skills through to complex algebra and comprehension.
Homework
At each visit to the Study Centre your child will be given a programme of homework that should be completed before the next class. Even in one subject, there may be homework on two different topics. All students should look upon the homework they receive as a weekly task – not a daily grind! There is flexibility – a child may choose to do a small amount each day, or in two or three sessions over the course of the week.
Your child never becomes bored, as the modular nature of the programme allows us not only to vary the type of work, without repetition, but also to cover the National Curriculum. http://www.direct.gov.uk/NationalCurriculum
Class Ethos
We aim to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere in the class. We talk to every child whilst in the classroom, and they can also turn to our trained assistants for friendly advice and help. Personal organisation and consideration for others is encouraged. Students are expected to bring a sharp pencil to class and to do their work quietly, without distracting others. However, there is usually a gentle buzz of conversation - older students often help the little ones or remind a new student of classroom routine. Friendships are formed here. We take our studies seriously - but we enjoy ourselves at the same time. Children arrive and leave with a smile.
Other Services Offered:
SATs (yr 2 - 6), Key stage 3 (Maths and English) GCSE (Maths and English), 11+ preparation, Entrance exam preparation.
For those students who are taking external exams we are able to offer sessions on exam preparations based on a series of books and activities which focus on problem solving skills/applications. The books are commercially printed and designed for use in schools.
