Who We Are:
My name is Stephen Peacock and I am the manager of the Wigan North Centre. I am a qualified maths teacher and have been teaching and tutoring students for over ten years, with many of those spent in Wigan schools. I started the Wigan First Class Learning maths and English tuition centre in the Summer of 2011 with the aim of supporting children in the area to develop vital maths, English and independent learning skills.
Where We Are:
We are based at Trinity United Reformed Church, Milton Grove. The class runs from 4:30 - 6:30 every Thursday evening. First Class Learning Students will normally spend approximately 20 minutes at the centre each week, or a little longer if two subjects are being studied. We believe that maximum progress will be made with regular practice and we ask all students to complete 10-15 minutes homework each day. This helps develop those all important independent learning skills.
What We Believe In:
At First Class Learning we support students in the local community with both maths and English tuition. Students of all ages attend the centre from Early Years all the way through to children studying GCSEs. First Class Learning aims to build confidence in children and develop their independent learning ability. Children of all abilities thrive in the First Class Learning centre as our programmes are individualised to their specific needs. Our students progress a step at a time, moving on only after they have understood and mastered a topic. At First Class Learning we believe in 1% steps to 100% success.
First Class Learning is a long term programme and students often stay with us for a number of years. At First Class Learning, we support your child's learning with the aim of making their school studies easier. Students can receive maths tuition or English tuition or can study both subjects together.
How does it work?
Using a combination of carefully structured worksheets and textbooks, your First Class Learning Tutor will devise a programme specifically for your child, to take him or her from the basics of Maths and/or English through to the more demanding aspects of school work. FCL was developed by a British team of educationalists specifically to support the National Curriculum in England and Wales (and the Scottish equivalent).
Before you decide to enrol your child with First Class Learning, she/he will be assessed so that all work set can be at exactly the right level to ensure maximum progress. There is no charge for this and no commitment at that stage and the assessment will help to determine his/her specific needs and ensure a suitable starting point in the course if you subsequently decide to join.
Once your child enrols, at each visit to the Study Centre he/she will be given a programme of homework that should be completed before the next class. Even in one subject, there may be homework on two different topics. All students should look upon the homework they receive as a weekly task – not a daily grind! There is flexibility – a child may choose to do a small amount each day, or in two or three sessions over the course of the week.
Improve at School, Increase Exam Grades
The class caters for students studying from primary age up to GCSE level. Specific support for exams and national tests is available. Students typically spend 20 – 30 minutes in class or a little longer if they are studying two subjects. Independent learning is encouraged but all students are aware that sympathetic help is always available and that rather than being a sign of failure an error is always seen as a learning opportunity.
