Maths and English Tuition at Brighton Withdean

Welcome to Brighton and Hove’s First Class Learning Study Centre which is run by Centre Manager, Polly Warren.

Through our structured programmes, Polly individualises each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in understanding. This helps with school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills – all so important since school closures in 2020/21.

Our 'little and often' approach means that the memory muscle is given a 'work out', and along with plenty of repetition and practice, helps children retain learning more easily. It is also a key component to building confidence and boosting self esteem.

How we work

Following some initial assessments, an individualised programme is put together which will support and encourage your child's learning. Your child will attend one of our study centres each week where they will receive one-to-one support from a tutor when needed but where they will also be encouraged to work independently. Your child will be given small amounts of homework which will reinforce the skills learnt and help embed any new learning. The amount of homework is always discussed regularly with parents and students to ensure that it is manageable. Happy children learn better which means better progress and results!

Tuition Services

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum.

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

Student Success

My daughter has really come along with her maths since joining a few months ago no more fighting battles with her homework. Polly is so nice and welcoming gives clear instructions and very understanding and gives no pressure at all. I can highly recommend any child that needs that little extra help.

I have nothing but good things to say about First Class Learning! Since my daughter started at FCL, her confidence has grown so much - her Year 6 SATs results were a testament to that. A huge thank you to Polly and her team who are always so patient and lovely. Polly is extremely approachable, with communication encouraged and worksheets tailored to each child. I'm so glad my friend recommended FCL. I have no hesitation in recommending to anyone reading this!

My son is so much more confident is his maths since having weekly session with Polly and her team. His class teacher has commented on the positive change and my son feels that he is at long last keeping up in class at school. Thank you.

How many times a week will my child attend the centre?
Once a week
How long do the sessions last?
We suggest 30 minutes for 1 subject and 1 hour for 2 subjects
How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling each child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into the sessions, parents are welcome to come in but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
