The Withdean Training Centre,
Brighton, East Sussex,
Expert English and maths tuition for children in Brighton & Hove at our friendly tuition centre. Call us now for a free consultation.
Welcome to Brighton & Hove's First Class Learning Centre. Our expert tutors support children with both maths and English tuition at our local study centres. Our aim is to help children achieve their potential, whether they are struggling, gifted or just need a boost.
Students of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend our Tuesday study centre at The Withdean Training Centre and Monday afternoon classes in Patcham Mehtodist Church Hall in Patcham. We cater for learners from Early Years and Primary through to GCSE.
We offer a free consultation with parents to discuss your concerns and then carry out an assessment to understand your child's strengths and the areas that need work. Once we have established your child’s needs, we put together a unique course of action to support your child’s learning and development.
Through weekly attendance at our study centre and by providing small amounts of homework, we help students progress in English and maths, as well as boost their confidence and raise self esteem. Small amounts of homework help to reinforce the skills learnt and help embed any new learning. Our "little and often" approach means that the memory muscle is being given a 'work out' and new learning is more likely to be remembered; this helps to boost confidence. The amount of homework is always discussed regularly with parents and students to ensure that it is manageable. Happy children learn better which means better progress and results!
From the basics of reading, writing and spelling to comprehension and creative writing skills, the First Class Learning English Programme follows principles that make it ideal for all learners, whether primary or secondary. Drawing on a variety of imaginative materials, the programme develops the key skills that allow the learner to read and write fluently, confidently and with enjoyment.
The First Class Learning Maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school Mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum.
How it works
One of our First Class Learning tutors will meet with you to discuss how we can help your child with maths or English. They will then sit down with your child and complete an assessment to determine which path is most suitable for them. Once we have established your child’s needs, we will put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child’s learning. If you feel happy with our plan and that we are the best option for you and your child, they will then be able to start attending regular classes at the centre. In these classes they will complete a short piece of work which will be marked, returned and discussed with the tutor, who will give them a detailed programme of homework to be completed before the next class.

Polly exudes positivity and has actively encouraged my girls to become more independent learners. The maths workbooks are organised, have clear explanations and levels of challenge. The 'little and often' approach is manageable and real progression can be seen by all.
What can I say my daughter has really come along with her maths since joining a few months ago no more fighting battles with her homework 😃Polly is so nice and welcoming gives clear instructions and very understanding and gives no pressure at all. I can highly recommend any child that needs that little extra help.
I was struggling to get my 7 yr old daughter (yr 3) to come to terms with maths. It was a daily challenge to convince her to do her homework. Excuses, Tears and tantrums for hours on end.
Desperate to break this cycle, I came across First Class learning.
At the same time, my 9 yr old son, (year 5), was lazy with his English subject, and it was hard work convincing him to do his English homework.
I arranged with Polly to visit and she assessed my daughter's and son's understanding of the subjects and the best way to individually engage them in the subject.
I haven't looked back since. My daughter readily and consistently does her homework set by first class learning without any fuss and does so extremely enthusiastically. She comments on how fun it is. She has come on leaps and bounds in just 3-4 sessions.
My son has received positive comments and rewards at school for his performance in English. I can see that his everyday use of English vocabulary has improved incredibly. And most importantly both children have a positive attitude to the subjects they were not jeen on.
Unlike some support study companies , First Class Learning supports the national curriculum.
My husband commented that starting up with First Class Learning has been the best decision for our kids , where studies are concerned.
Thank you First Class Learning. I was really impressed with how much the support and approach helped Harvey. It helped him to address his attitude to learning and made a big difference to confidence in approaching SATS,
Thank you Polly for helping William with his English studies. We are over the moon. He is sure that he could not have passed his GCSE without your expert help. We are very proud of him and so grateful to you and First Class Learning. You are a star!

Meet the team
The Brighton Withdean and Patcham First Class Learning Centres are run by Polly Warren. Polly is fully trained and qualified to deliver the First Class Learning study programmes in English and maths to children from Early Years all the way to Key Stage 4.
Polly started her career in the marketing and PR industry but decided to pursue a career in education after working with children through a client’s sponsorship of grass roots football in communities across the country.
Polly secured an “on the job” training programme in a large London inner city Primary school and spent the next 15 years teaching children across a range of educational settings.
As well as running two busy First Class Learning Centres, Polly is on the team for the ongoing development of maths materials for First Class Learning. She is also a mentor for new Centre Managers. Polly is passionate about education and helping children achieve their potential and has been a parent governor at her local Primary School.
