Maths and English Tuition at Dundee East

Hello and welcome to First Class Learning in Dundee! We are a Maths and English Tuition Centre led by Derek, a qualified teacher with 20 years of teaching experience, the past 17 within the Dundee School System. Children from the age of 4 are welcome to learn through the First Class Learning bespoke teaching programme.

Using the First Class Learning system, Derek will personalise a plan of learning for each individual child, ensuring that their learning journey is robust and aimed specifically at that child’s ability. This approach is designed to bridge any existing gaps in learning and build confidence in independent learning - a key life skill.

Pupils can join for help in maths or English, or both subjects. Derek aims to help the pupils get the most out of themselves through continual positive reinforcement and use of the ‘little and often’ approach to learning to ensure steady gains in subject understanding.

How we work

The first thing we will do at First Class Learning is discuss your child’s learning experience. This will be done through a phone call or email conversation - whichever you prefer. Then we will organise an initial assessment of your child’s learning through a series of short math and English assessments. At this point, Derek will discuss the outcome of the tests with the child’s parents or carers and suggest a course of study both supportive and challenging in nature that would best suit your child. If you are happy with that assessment, then your child can be booked into a weekly visit at St Aidan’s Church, our home for First Class Learning in the Dundee East area. Upon attending First Class Learning, your child will receive some tuition about new subject content and also some work to complete at the Centre. Your child will be supplied with homework sheets to complete and you, as parent or carer, will be given a handbook to help assess your child’s work. When they return to the centre the following week, their completed homework sheets will be submitted and checked over and more tuition will take place, building on your child’s previous learning and homework. Before your child leaves, they will receive the next set of homework to complete in time for the following weekly session.

Tuition Services

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the primary school curriculum and much of the secondary curriculum.

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme. FCL Dundee East can provide help for pupils up to Higher level English.

Where can I park at or near St Aidan’s?
There is on-street parking around the building on Brook Street and there is a parking lot at Broughty Ferry beach, just a few minutes away from the Church entrance.
Will I be able to come and watch?
Your child may find that they need a little reassurance during their first few centre visits, so you are welcome to come and watch from a distance. You might be surprised at how quickly your child wants to ‘get on with it’ on their own!
Are Covid-19 Protocols followed at the Centre?
The manager will maintain a seating arrangement that allows for social distancing and contact tracing to take place. The centre will have PPE available and require all adults to comply with government guidelines.
How much homework will there be for my child? Do they really need to complete it?
This is a partnership between the Centre and your family. First Class Learning will set between 10 -15 minutes of homework per night; we ask that you have a quiet space set aside for this to be completed. Parents and Carers will be suppled with handbooks to help in marking their homework with the child.
