Maths and English Tuition at Otley

Welcome to First Class Learning Otley, where children learn to succeed. We are delighted to support children in the local community, of all ages, abilities with both maths, English and science tuition.

Through our structured programmes, Martin and Stephenie individualises each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding and promote development of existing knowledge. This therefore helps with their school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills, something that is extremely important in today's busy classrooms in schools.

Our maths, English and science programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities, so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.

We aim to create confident, excited learners. Every programme is designed around the students’ needs, which guarantees the work is not too hard or too easy, the best way to build confidence. Our materials are dynamic and interesting, ensuring students stay engaged with learning.

Tuition is not just about solving problems, it is also about helping each student become the best they can be. Our highly tailored approach can overcome challenges for some students, and help others avoid boredom by stretching them. We aim to help them excel and reach their potential.

How we work

The Centre Managers – Martin and Stephenie - complete some initial assessments with your child and provide informative feedback on their strengths and areas to improve. They will also recommend a personalised learning programme to meet your child's needs. If you enrol, your child will attend the centre once a week. At the centre, your child will be supported as they work through their personalised learning programme. Between their weekly centre visit, they will also receive a programme of daily bite-size homework tasks to further embed and consolidate the learning from the centre. Our programme is a partnership between First Class Learning, your child and you as parents, so communication between all is important.

Centre Manager

The Otley First Class Learning Tuition Centre is run by Martin and Stephenie. Both Centre Managers are qualified, experienced and highly successful teachers, who are fully trained to deliver the First Class Learning study programmes. They both hold an Enhanced DBS certificate. Martin (BEng, PGCE) has worked as a qualified teacher of maths as well as a private tutor. He is also currently a GCSE and A-level maths Examiner for Edexcel. Prior to teaching he worked for many years in finance and engineering. Stephenie (BA Hons with QTS) has worked as a qualified primary school teacher, including leading the delivery of English. Stephenie has been a SATs English examiner. Prior to teaching she has worked in banking and finance.

Maths

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

Science

Our comprehensive science programme will develop your child's knowledge and the skills required as part of their school curriculum. The programme has a proven record for improving results and encourages enjoyment in learning.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?

FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.

How will FCL help with my child’s school work?

By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.

Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?

If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.

If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?

No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
