Welcome to West Calder First Class Learning, where children learn to succeed. We would be delighted to support children of all abilities who are trying to fulfil their potential with both maths and English tuition. Children from the age of 4 are welcome to learn through the First Class Learning bespoke programmes, which are focused on the National Curriculum and delivered by fully qualified teachers.
Through our structured programmes, we personalise each child’s learning path, which targets to fill any existing gaps in their understanding and promote knowledge development. This helps with their schoolwork, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills.
Our maths and English programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities, so students move on when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.
The first thing we will do is to discuss your child’s learning experience and needs. This will be done through a phone call and/or email conversation. After the initial discussion, our Centre Manager, Yao, will discuss how we can help your child with learning needs. We will arrange a free assessment for your child’s learning through a series of short maths and English assessments. At this point, Yao will discuss the outcome of tests with the child’s parents or carers and put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child's learning. Following the discussion of our bespoke plan tailored towards your child’s learning needs, they can be booked into a weekly course at the West Calder Community Centre, Dickson Street, EH55 8DZ, our home for First Class Learning in the West Calder area. During attendance at our learning centre once a week for approximately 30 minutes for each subject, your child will complete a short piece of work which will be marked, returned, and discussed with the tutors, who will work with your child on any questions and new learning content. A detailed programme of homework to be completed before the next class will be given before the end of the session – it is equivalent to approximately 10-15 minutes worth of daily homework per subject. This is to ensure mastery and fluency of what has been studied at the weekly session at each learning step. The individualised programme is flexible and tailored to your child’s needs and abilities.
