Maths and English Tuition at Anstey

Welcome to the Anstey First Class Learning Centre. Our centre is NOW OPEN again and operating with COVID regulations in place, sanitising stations, social distancing, with tutors wearing face visors, allowing us to speak with students and continue to help them with their work.

Our centre supports children and adults in the local community from primary school age upwards, in maths and English tuition which is tailored to their individual needs.

The First Class Learning study programmes are aligned to the National Curriculum and our Centre Manager Debbie, along with her qualified team of tutors, support your child’s learning in maths and English to help build confidence and concentration, whilst developing their independent learning skills.

How we work

The first step would be to contact Debbie to arrange a chat either by phone, whatsapp or email, to discuss how we can help your child with maths, English or both subjects. Following on from this Debbie will sit down with your child and they’ll complete an assessment, giving her the opportunity to identify any learning gaps and the most suitable study plan going forward. Our assessments are free of charge, allowing you the opportunity to decide if this is the right tuition path for your child. We then piece together a tailored plan which supports and encourages your child’s learning. If you’re happy with this outcome, your child can then begin attending our class on a weekly basis. During the session, children complete a short piece of work, usually in the form of worksheets, which are checked and talked through with one of our tutors. Before they leave the class they will be given a set of homework sheets which they complete at home before returning the following week.

Centre Manager

First Class Learning Anstey is run by Debbie Wolfe-Kinch, a mummy, wife and director of a successful travel business. Debbie is fully trained and qualified to deliver the First Class Learning study programmes and holds an enhanced DBS certificate. Debbie takes great pleasure in watching her students' confidence grow, and seeing them thrive in subjects at school they previously had little confidence in.

Tuition Services

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum. It builds upon prior learning ensuring concepts are embedded before moving on.

Our English programme concentrates on reading, phonics, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, comprehension, creative writing and cursive handwriting. The initial assessment checks your child's specific needs so that we can provide an individualised programme most appropriate and engaging for them.

Student Success

After having my 8 year old fall behind in English and literature I felt that I needed help in helping him progress. Debbie has been so patient and enthusiastic with him. It has only taken a matter of weeks where we are now seeing results at school. He is gaining confidence and really enjoys his tuition visits. These sessions are fantastic and his teachers are seeing the results too.

Days prior to going into lock down in March 2020 I was told that my daughter, Year 3 at the time, was behind in both maths and English. I had a small panic as lockdown hit, wondering how I could prevent her from falling even further behind. Our school were providing no learning materials and I was still working. Thankfully I had met Debbie at a networking event and had already asked her to do an assessment with my daughter on both maths and English. With schools closed I enrolled her on the sessions with a focus on maths. Although it all had to be virtual support, Debbie and her team were fantastic. By the time we hit summer 2021 my daughter had not only caught up on maths but was working slightly above her age group. We have now switched the focus to English and I can see improvements there too. My daughter loves attending the sessions, now in person again, and is usually more than happy completing her work between sessions too. Massive thank you to Debbie and her team, especially Bev, we wouldn't have achieved this without them.

My daughter first joined First Class Learning Rothley during Foundation as due to some hearing difficulties had started to fall behind on her phonics & reading. Once a week Jean attends for English working through the work sheets, however due to her age & difficulties Jean was hugely supported with her tasks & often things were adapted to support her more visual learning style. During the pandemic Debbie continued to support with 1:1 zoom lessons & then face to face. Jean has now returned & she has made huge progress. She can now confidently work independently on the worksheets, but also still receives alternative tasks related to the school curriculum to ensure she stays on track. Her recent parents evening was much improved & I know Debbie & her team are a great support to Jean & myself to ensure she enjoys learning. She enjoys going every week & seeing/hearing the other children's learning objectives. Would definitely recommend.

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence. It also develops a good study habit and independent learning rather than becoming dependent upon teaching them.
How will FCL help my child’s school work?
By bridging gaps and developing confidence, a child’s attitude can become more positive, whilst at the same time our programmes provide them with the skills sets required to transfer through to their school studies.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If a child is worried about coming along to their first session, we will work with parents to settle them in. However, you will not need to stay for long as once a child has experienced the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We aim to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long-term programme, not a ‘quick fix’. However, there are many reasons why you may need to discontinue, so I ask for just 1 month’s notice.
