Maths and English Tuition at Mitcham Canons Leisure

The First Class Learning Centre held at Mitcham Canons Leisure Centre on Saturday 10:00 to 12:00 is run by an experienced Centre Manager, Brinda Vyas, who has been in the private sector Managing business for over 10 years.

We are qualified to deliver the First Class Learning study programmes and hold an enhanced DBS certificate. We cater for learners from Early Years and Primary through to GCSE, offering a varied approach including independent learning. The pace and content of the learning is individualised for each student.

Our expert Centre Manager supports your child's learning in maths, English, or both subjects together, in order to help with their school performance, build confidence and develop independent learning skills. We even prepare children for their Wandsworth Test for Verbal and non-Verbal.

Our English and maths programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. All programmes follow the National Curriculum.

How we work

Our First Class Learning Centre Manager will call you to discuss how we can help your child with maths or English. They will then assist your child to complete an assessment to determine which path is most suitable for them. Once we have established your child's needs, we will put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child's learning. If you feel happy with our plan and that we are the best option for you and your child, they will then be able to start attending regular classes at the centre or online. In these classes they will complete a short piece of work which will be marked, returned and discussed with the Centre Manager, who will give them a detailed programme of homework to be completed before the next class.

FAQ

How can FCL help with a child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence, we can help to instil a positive attitude – at the same time giving them the skill sets needed to tackle school work.
How does FCL differ from 1:1 tutoring?
FCL provides structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach rather than an hour or more of concentrated teaching. This develops good study habits and encourages independent learning, so children don’t become totally dependent on others teaching them.
If I enrol my child, am I committed to a lengthy contract?
Not at all. Unlike independent school, where parents normally have to pay for at least a full term in advance, with FCL you only pay for the current month, and can withdraw at four weeks’ notice. That said, FCL is designed as a long-term programme, and indeed there is no such thing as a ‘quick fix’ where maths or English are concerned!
What if a child is either behind or ahead of their school level?
This is one of the great advantages of the FCL system. Children are assessed before enrolling, and then start in our programme at a point where they are already confident. They then work through their own individual programme at their own pace. They don’t have to move forward before understanding, but equally there is nothing to hold back a gifted child who needs to move on.
