Maths and English Tuition at Shinfield

Welcome to First Class Learning Shinfield, where children learn to succeed in a safe and secure environment. We are delighted to support children in the local community, of all ages (5-16 years old) and abilities, with maths, English and Science tuition. We also offer Science, 11 plus courses (Grammar School), 11 plus mock exams, GCSE and SATs. Students of all ages attend our study centres in RG2. We cater for learners from age 5-16 (Foundation stage, KS1, KS2, KS3 through to GCSE

We also provide 11 plus preparation courses: 11 plus year 3 Foundation course, 11 plus year 4 Preparation course, 11 plus year 5 Preparation course, 11 plus creative writing course, 11 plus intensive courses in Easter break and in July and August, 11 plus mock exams, 11 plus topic based 1-day courses e.g. 11 plus comprehension, vocab, maths etc

How we work

Our First Class Learning Centre Manager, Shilpa will call you to discuss how she can help your child with maths and English. They will then arrange a convenient time for your child to complete an assessment to determine which path is most suitable for them. Once we have established your child's needs, we will put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child's learning. Your child will attend our centre each week, where they will work through their personalised worksheet programme, supported by the Centre Managers. They will be given a structured homework plan to reinforce their learning. We encourage all parents to mark the homework daily so that corrections can be made as they go through the week and their progress will be seen in the results. (Don’t worry! Comprehensive handbooks with answers are provided.) Our programme is a partnership between First Class Learning, your child and you as parents, so communication between all is important. She is an experienced tutor and has delivered courses across a variety of settings. Shilpa knows and understands how important it is to help children develop a winning mindset, aim high and to reach their potential. Every First Class Learning Centre Manager holds an enhanced DBS certificate.

Tuition Services

Maths

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum. We can help your child from the age of 4/5 up to GCSE level.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme. We can help from Reception up to GCSE level.

Science

Our comprehensive GCSE science exam preparation programme will develop your child's knowledge and the skills required as part of their school curriculum. The programme has a proven record for improving results and encourages enjoyment of learning.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?

FCL offers structure and daily practice with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence. It also develops a good study habit and independent learning rather than becoming dependent upon others teaching them.

How will FCL help with my child’s school work?

By bridging gaps and developing confidence, a child’s attitude can become more positive, whilst at the same time our programmes provide them with the skills sets required to transfer through to their school studies.

Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?

If a child is worried about coming along to their first session, we will work with parents to settle them in. However, you will not need to stay for long as once a child has experienced the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We aim to encourage independent and confident students.

If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?

No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long-term programme, not a ‘quick fix’. However, there are many reasons why you may need to discontinue, so I ask for just 1 month’s notice.
