Maths and English Tuition at Edinburgh West End

Welcome to Edinburgh West End First Class Learning Centre. We support children in the local community with maths and English tuition, with science tuition available upon request.

Our structured programmes are customised to each child, aiming to bridge gaps in understanding while enhancing existing knowledge. This approach supports schoolwork, boosts confidence, and fosters independent learning.

We offer flexible programmes catering to each student's unique needs, ensuring progress through regular assessments and a 'little and often' method emphasising repetition and practice.

Centre Managers Jessica and Alex bring a wealth of experience. Jessica, a qualified teacher with a background in finance, has taught IGCSE and IB in prestigious international schools. She holds degrees in mathematics, international education, and a PGCE. Alex, with a background in software engineering and business, has extensive tutoring experience in maths, English, and science, both in the U.K. and internationally. She has degrees in history and computer science.

Jessica and Alex are dedicated to unlocking each student's potential through continuous encouragement and tailored support.

How we work

A First Class Learning Centre Manager will contact you to explore how we can support your child's progress in maths and English. Following this initial discussion, they will guide your child through a free assessment to identify the most appropriate learning trajectory. The assessment ranges from 20 minutes to an hour and can be arranged at your home or another location that suits you best. After pinpointing your child's specific needs, we will craft a tailored learning plan designed to bolster and nurture your child's educational journey.

Jessica McCarroll and Alex McCarroll

Centre Manager

Jessica holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Virginia, complemented by a PGCE and a Master's in International Education from the University of Sunderland. Her professional journey spans teaching roles in Hong Kong schools and extensive experience in the finance sector across New York, London, and Hong Kong managing money for over thirty years. Alex, a Fettes College alumnus, excelled academically with top grades before earning a Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Exeter. She is furthering her education by pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science at the University of Bath. Alex's diverse background includes tutoring in mathematics, English, and science in both London and Hong Kong, alongside a career in finance as a software engineer and roles in start-ups in London and the United States. Together, Jessica and Alex bring a wealth of teaching and real-world experience, drawing on their diverse cultural insights and professional expertise to deeply understand and connect with students from all backgrounds.

Maths

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

Science

Our comprehensive science programme will develop your child's knowledge and the skills required as part of their school curriculum. The programme has a proven record for improving results and encourages enjoyment in learning.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?

FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.

How will FCL help with my child’s school work?

By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.

Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?

If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.

If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?

No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
