After finding out my prelim grads at national 5 for Maths and English (a C and a D) I was disappointed and tried many tutors hoping to improve within a few months and First Class Learning was by far the best one. Ashley focused on my weakest areas, marked my work, and allowed me to contact her whenever I needed if I had any questions. This helped me achieve an A in both Maths and English in my final exam. I would definitely recommend First Class Learning.

Maths and English Tuition at Edinburgh

Welcome to the Edinburgh First Class Learning Centre! Our team have been running highly successful after school maths and English classes for 12 years (7 years previously as Kumon). We support children of all abilities in the local community who are trying to fulfil their potential.

Students of all ages attend our study centre once a week for around 30 minutes per subject. During these classes, students will return their homework and go over any doubts from the previous week with a tutor, as well as completing new worksheets. They are then set a programme of 15-30 minutes of work per day to do at home, practising what they have learnt in class to guarantee proficiency and confidence at each stage.

Our structured programmes are fully aligned with the National Curriculum, ensuring each child will learn all essential skills taught within their school year. The foundation of our programme is the repetition of core skills and applying these skills through exam-style questions to identify and address any gaps in understanding. This approach ensures students are thoroughly prepared to excel in their exams. Additionally, we work to build confidence and encourage independent learning, both of which are extremely important to a child's educational development.

We put a huge focus on ensuring students are confident in all topics, particularly making sure they are able to apply their core skills to word problems, which will be necessary for testing at school. We also do regular tests to ensure the best possible progress is made. The ‘little and often’ approach of daily homework, with plently of repetition when required, really does make a huge difference.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a free assessment at the centre for your child. Once you have made contact, we will arrange a day and time to bring your child in for an assessment. The English and maths diagnostic tests take about 30 minutes each subject. Following your child's assessment, we will let you know a little more about the FCL programme and how everything works .e.g. routines, costs, feedback etc. We offer a 2 week free trial which allows families to confirm that the programme is right for their needs. Using our initial tests and the trial weeks, we will establish the correct starting point for your child to support and encourage your child's learning, enabling them to gain confidence and fill in gaps they may have. They will then be able to start attending weekly sessions at the centre, you choose a day and time which fits into your schedule. Each weekly session, they will revise any corrections or doubts from the previous week and get introduced to any new concepts for the week ahead. They will be encouraged to attempt tasks independently, all the while having the support of their tutor on hand. Following the class session, students will complete their daily homework to continue practising the skills they have learnt in class. We prioritise regular testing to ensure students are confident with a variety of skills, giving end of term tests throughout the year. Additionally, we always try to give personal feedback to the family after each session to keep you updated on your child’s progress.

Tuition Services

Maths

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it focuses on building confidence and mastery of key topics. The flexibility enables work to bridge gaps and to work beyond their current school curriculum level if appropriate.

English

Our English programme concentrates on all aspects of the curriculum: reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that an individualised programme of learning can be developed.

Science

Our comprehensive science programme is designed as an introduction to Science for children in Primary 7 - Senior 2. It will develop your child’s knowledge of key concepts required as part of their school curriculum, working with Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We use a comprehension based programme to teach core skills and then use summary questions to guarantee they have retained information correctly.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence. It also develops a good study habit and independent learning rather than becoming dependent upon teaching them.
Can you help my child prepare for private school entrance exams?
Yes, we do offer extra help for those preparing for entrance exams and we have additional materials targeted to the specific requirements of these exams. We offer personalised study plans, practice tests, and review sessions to ensure you child is well-prepared. Our approach includes building core skills, teaching effective test-taking strategies, and boosting your child's confidence to help them succeed in securing a place at their chosen school.
How will FCL help my child’s school work?
By bridging gaps and developing confidence, a child’s attitude to learning can become more positive in all environments. At the same time our programmes provide them with the skill sets required to tackle the variety of topics covered by the National Curriculum.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long-term programme, not a ‘quick fix’. However, there are many reasons why you may need to discontinue, so I ask for just 1 month’s notice.
