We are so glad to pick FCL, our son Jayden has started a few months ago, and he looks forward to go to the class every week. All the teachers are very professional and patient. They communicate the learning progress with us after every class. Big thank you to Gayle and teacher Elaine. Highly recommend.

Maths and English Tuition at Edinburgh

Welcome to the Edinburgh First Class Learning Centre. Grant and Gayle have been running highly successful after school maths and English classes for 10 years (7 years previously as Kumon). We support children of all abilities in the local community who are trying to fulfil their potential.

Students of all ages attend our study centre once a week for around 30 minutes per subject. In these classes they will hand in their previous week of work and complete that day’s worksheets which will be marked, returned and discussed with the tutor. They are then set a programme of 15-30 minutes of work per day to do at home, practising what they have learnt in class to ensure mastery and fluency at each step.

Through our structured programmes we individualise each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding. This helps with their school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills, all of which are extremely important in today’s busy classrooms in school.

Our English and maths programmes are flexible and tailored to the learner's individual needs and abilities, so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The ‘little and often’ approach, with plenty of repetition when required and practice, really does make a huge difference.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a free assessment at the centre for your child. Once you have made contact, we will arrange a day and time to bring your child in for an assessment. The English and maths diagnostic tests take about 30 minutes each subject. Whilst your child is doing these tests it is normally a good time to let the parents know a little more about the FCL programme and how everything works .e.g. routines, costs, feedback etc. We currently offer a 2 week free trial which some families take up to confirm that the programme is right for their needs, other families (most coming from recommendations from other families) start the program straight away. Once the diagnostic tests (or trial weeks) have established the correct levels for your child’s needs, we will put together an individualised programme that will support and encourage your child’s learning, enabling them to gain confidence and fill in gaps that they may have. They will then be able to start attending the weekly sessions at the centre, you choose a day and time that suits your needs. Each weekly session they will be introduced to both new and old concepts, depending on what’s required. They will be encouraged to attempt tasks independently, all the while having the support of their tutor on hand. Tasks completed within the session are marked and students are then provided with a structured programme of homework to continue practising the skills they have met in class. Children are assessed at the end of each term and any areas of concern are prioritised. We always try to give personal feedback to the family after each session

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence. It also develops a good study habit and independent learning rather than becoming dependent upon teaching them.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If a child is worried about coming along to their first session, we will work with parents to settle them in. However, you will not need to stay for long as once a child has experienced the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own.
How will FCL help my child’s school work?
By bridging gaps and developing confidence, a child’s attitude to learning can become more positive in all environments. At the same time our programmes provide them with the skill sets required to tackle the variety of topics covered by the National Curriculum.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long-term programme, not a ‘quick fix’. However, there are many reasons why you may need to discontinue, so I ask for just 1 month’s notice.
