Students of all ages attend our study centre on a Thursday. In these sessions they will hand in their completed work and begin their new set of work with the support of our tutors; their work will be returned and discussed with their tutor. They are then set a programme of work of 10-15 minutes per day to do at home, practising what they have learnt in the class to ensure proficiency and fluency at each step.
Through our structured programmes, our team individualises each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding. This helps with their schoolwork, builds confidence, and develops independent learning skills, all of which are extremely important in today's busy classrooms in schools.
Our English and maths programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities, so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.
The first step is to arrange for your child to complete our online maths and English Skills Assessment. The Assessment is national curriculum aligned and will highlight the strengths and weaknesses your child may be experiencing at school. Using this information, we will draft an individual learning plan listing the areas we will cover and the learning tools we will use. We will also send you a report listing how your child has performed against the national curriculum. After this, your child will be invited to one of our classes for a two-week free trial. Although, the first few weeks can be difficult as we try to implement a new after school routine, it should give you enough time to understand our learning model. When your child attends each class, they will sit in their own space and a tutor will approach them. Based on the individual learning plan, the tutor will take the first area we need to cover and teach your child on a one-to-one basis. The tutor will then watch your child answer a few questions to ensure they have understood the tools we have taught. To cement the learning, your child will receive some practice questions to do in class and at home. For homework, we ask they do a little bit each day; the objective is to ensure they remember what we have covered and cement it in their mind. All of your child’s work is marked and returned with detailed feedback. We will continue the same cycle, increasing the difficulty and moving on to the next module as listed in the individual learning plan. All our materials are national curriculum aligned so we will be working towards the same objectives as the schools. Also, our materials are managed by a team of teachers and exam invigilators, so it is always up to date. Our programme is a partnership between First Class Learning, your child and you as parents so communication between us is important. If they have any problems with their homework, you can book a Zoom or telephone support call between 9am and 6pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
