Maths and English Tuition at Hartlepool and Billingham

Welcome to the Hartlepool and Billingham First Class Learning Centre. We support young learners in the local community with both maths and English tuition. Chris Collins, the Centre Manager, has over thirty years’ teaching experience in secondary, primary and out-of-school settings.

Our maths and English programmes are structured, flexible and tailored to learners’ individual needs and abilities so your child will only move on when they are confident with a topic. The ‘little and often” approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.

Following an initial assessment, Chris will provide a structured, personalised daily plan of around 10-15 minutes study every day. One-to-one support is given when it is needed and youngsters are supported to become confident, independent learners through the development of mastery and fluency.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a convenient time for your child to complete an initial assessment. The Centre Manager, Chris, will discuss how he can help your child with their maths or English. A personalised programme is put together that will support and encourage your child’s learning enabling them to gain confidence and develop the knowledge and skills they need. Your child can then start attending regular classes at the centre or online and completing the daily worksheets with ongoing support from the centre manager whenever it is needed. Our programme is a partnership between First Class Learning, your child and you as parents so communication between us all is important. We encourage all parents to mark the homework daily so that corrections can be made as your child goes through the week and progress can be seen in the results. You can call Chris throughout the week if there are any questions or your child is stuck with something.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence. It also develops a good study habit and independent learning rather than becoming dependent upon others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By bridging gaps and developing confidence, a child’s attitude can become more positive, whilst at the same time our programmes provide them with the skills sets required to transfer through to their school studies.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If a child is worried about coming along to their first session, we will work with parents to settle them in. However, you will not need to stay for long as once a child has experienced the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We aim to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long-term programme, not a ‘quick fix’. However, there are many reasons why you may need to discontinue, so I ask for just 1 month’s notice.
