Maths and English Tuition at Sunderland

Welcome to the Sunderland First Class Learning Centre. Emma Orton, Centre Manager, has been running highly successful after-school maths, English and science tuition centres for over 10 years.

Students of all ages are supported with maths, English and science tuition. Emma individualises each student’s learning programme to target any gaps in understanding and to further develop knowledge and skills. The bespoke programmes help with school work and exam preparation as well as build confidence and independence. A varied approach is offered which includes 1:1 support and independent learning provision.

Our maths, English and science programmes are flexible and tailored to learners’ individual needs and abilities so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Ongoing assessments are carried out to measure progress and enable Emma to adapt learning programmes accordingly. The ‘little and often’ approach is recommended and 10-15 minutes per day homework is provided to encourage repetition and practice.

How we work

The Centre Manager, Emma Orton, will call you to discuss how First Class Learning can help your child with maths, English or science. Any feedback you have from school or any observations you have made about areas of strength and weakness will be discussed. Once Emma has completed an initial assessment to establish your child’s needs, she will put together a bespoke learning programme that will support and encourage your child’s learning, enabling them to gain confidence and bridge any gaps they may have. Your child will then be able to start attending regular classes at the centre or online. They will be introduced to the concepts within their scheduled work each session and encouraged to attempt tasks independently after completing examples together with their tutor. Tasks completed within the session are marked and students are then provided with a structured programme of homework to continue practising the skills they have met in the class.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence. It also develops a good study habit and independent learning rather than becoming dependent upon others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By bridging gaps and developing confidence, a child’s attitude can become more positive, whilst at the same time our programmes provide them with the skills sets required to transfer through to their school studies.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If a child is worried about coming along to their first session, we will work with parents to settle them in. However, you will not need to stay for long as once a child has experienced the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We aim to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long-term programme, not a ‘quick fix’. However, there are many reasons why you may need to discontinue, so I ask for just 1 month’s notice.
