Maths and English Tuition in Bristol Redland

Welcome to the Redland First Class Learning Study Centre. Rachel Holdom, centre manager, has been running highly successful after-school maths and English classes for over 24 years (12 years Kumon).

COVID-19 UPDATE:- We continue to offer 1:1 support remotely with video or phone calls and the daily worksheets are posted to you. Due to the Coronavirus, the centre sessions are temporarily closed. However, all students can still make the same progress as if they were coming to the class.

Students of all ages are provided with a structured and individualised daily plan of study of around 10-15 minutes per day. 1:1 support is given whenever it is needed by a video call or phone call and weekly results are collected to ensure mastery and fluency.

The individualised programme is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding. This therefore helps with their school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills, something that is extremely important in today's busy classrooms in schools.

Our English and maths programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practise, really does make a huge difference.

Through individualised programmes, our expert Centre Managers support your child's learning in maths, English or both subjects together in order to help with their school studies, build confidence and develop independent learning skills, something that is extremely important in today's busy classrooms in schools.

How It Works

The first step is to arrange a convenient time for your child to complete some initial assessments. These are done via a video call. The Centre Manager, Rachel, will discuss how she can help your child with their maths or English. An individualised programme is put together that will support and encourage your child's learning enabling them to gain confidence and fill in gaps that they may have. Your child can then start completing the daily worksheets with ongoing support from the Centre Manager whenever it is needed. Our programme is a partnership between First Class Learning, your child and you as parents so communication between all is important. We encourage all parents to mark the homework daily so that corrections can be made as they go through the week and their progress will be seen in the results. If they have any problems with the work, you can call your Rachel at anytime between 9:00 and 6:00, Monday to Friday.

They are able to progress beyond their school level if they are capable of doing so and the work is tailored to each individual child's needs.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

Student Success

Would really recommend the new learning centre at Redland with Shaun and Rachel. I have two girls, aged 7 and 9, who have been attending and their confidence in maths has greatly improved.
Laura Thompson
Massive thanks to Rachel and her team. My daughter attends Rachel’s Redland centre and used to have no confidence in maths at all, but in the last few months of doing FCL she has made so much progress and now actually enjoys maths.
Oliver Gammon
It’s been great working with the FCL team, and my children’s ability in English has improved immensely.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt & gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
