Maths and English Tuition at East Calder

Welcome to the East Calder First Class Learning Centre, an expansion of a UK wide company which has been running highly successful after-school Maths, English and Science classes for several years. First Class Learning has over 300 centres throughout the UK and is unique in that its programme is individualised and tailored to the National Curriculum.

This programme has supported thousands of children of all abilities in the local communities to:

  • Build confidence and fulfil their potential.

  • Undertake successful exam preparation in order to achieve desired results.

  • Gain entry into private school through succeeding in entrance examinations.

Students of all ages attend the study centre once a week for around 30 minutes per subject. In these classes they will hand in their previous week’s work and complete on-site worksheets which will be marked, returned and discussed with the tutor. They are then set a programme of 15-30 minutes of work per day to do at home, practising what they have learnt in class, to ensure mastery and fluency at each step.

As our English and Maths programmes are flexible and tailored to the learner's individual needs and abilities, our students move on only when they are confident with a topic. This helps with their school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills, all of which are extremely important in today’s busy school classrooms. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The ‘little and often’ approach, with plenty of repetition when required, really does make a huge difference.

How we work

Once you have made contact, we will arrange a date and time for you to bring your child in for a free assessment. The English and Maths diagnostic tests take about 30 minutes each. Whilst your child is doing these tests it is normally a good time to let the parents know a little more about the FCL programme and how everything works .e.g. routines, costs, feedback etc. One week’s free trial will be offered which some families take up to confirm that the programme is right for their needs, other families decide to start the program straight away. Once the diagnostic tests (or trial week) have established the correct levels for your child’s needs, we will put together an individualised programme that will support and encourage your child’s learning, enabling them to gain confidence and fill in gaps that they may have. They will then be able to start attending the weekly sessions at the centre - you choose a day and time that suits your needs During each weekly session they will be introduced to both new and old concepts, depending on what’s required. They will be encouraged to attempt tasks independently, all the while having the support of their tutor on hand. Tasks completed within the session are marked and students are then provided with a structured programme of homework to continue practising the skills they have met in class. Students are assessed at the end of each term and any areas of concern are prioritised. We give personal feedback to the family after each session as required.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can you help my child prepare for Private school entrance exams?
Yes, we do offer extra help for those preparing for entrance exams and we have additional materials targeted to the specific requirements of these exams. We offer personalised study plans, practice tests and review sessions to ensure your child is well prepared. Our approach includes building core skills, teaching effective test-taking strategies and boosting your child’s confidence to help them succeed in securing a place at their chosen school.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
