Maths and English Tuition at Galway Oranmore

Welcome to the Galway - Oranmore First Class Learning Centre. Frank Murphy has been running afterschool maths classes here for over ten years.

Students of all ages from Junior Infants to Junior Certificate attend our centre in the Maldron Hotel in Oranmore. The resources we use are pen and paper based and follow the Irish Curriculum.

Through our structured programme, Frank individualises each child's learning path which is targeted to fill in any existing gaps in their understanding. This helps with school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills. A small amount of daily homework ensures regular practice and long term retention of information.

Because our programme is flexible and tailored to individual needs and abilities students move on only when they are confident with a topic. We believe in one percent steps to one hundred percent success.

How we work

We will meet with you and your student, either in person in the Maldron Hotel or online via Zoom. We take this as an opportunity for you and your child to describe their experience of mathematics and if there are areas which may be challenging or which may need further explanation. We will then outline how we may be able to help, and we will chart out a plan of study for your student. If you are happy to proceed, then your child can attend one of our weekly classes at the centre or instead you can opt to book a weekly online slot. The class consists of the student doing a set piece of work which has been carefully explained to them. They have the opportunity to highlight any difficulties and ask any questions they may have. They will then be given a piece of daily work to complete before we meet again in next week’s class.

Centre Manager

Frank Murphy is the manager of FCL Galway. Frank has a background in science but has worked in education for many years. As a parent and a grandparent, he also understands that all children do not think the same way and consequently we may need to change the way concepts are presented. Frank has seen the lives of dozens of children transformed from where they struggle in school to where they feel confident and happy to be a part of maths class. Frank is assisted by his wife Briege who is a former teacher and who also has many years of experience in helping children to reach their full potential in maths. Frank and Briege hold Garda Vetting Clearance Certificates. Costs: 100 euro per month. One-off Registration fee: 45 euro.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so we just ask for a month's notice.
