Maths, English and Science Tuition at Hereford Belmont

Welcome to the Hereford Belmont First Class Learning Centre where children can learn and develop in a safe supportive environment. We enthusiastically support children in the local community with maths and English tuition.

Tutoring has been shown to assist students academic development, with small group tutoring adding up to 4 months additional progress. This additional progress can be linked to students receiving additional detailed one to one feedback reinforcing the learning already undertaken and supporting the next stages. The work is tailored to your child’s individual areas of development and is varied and engaging to keep them enthusiastic about their own learning journey.

Through our structured programmes, we personalise each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding and promote development of existing knowledge. This helps with their schoolwork, builds confidence, and develops independent learning skills.

Our programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities, so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.

First Class Learning uses worksheets rather than electronic devices to help children develop their functional movement and writing skills. Development of these writing

skills ensure that writing does not become a barrier to learning with the additional development and practice that the program introduces.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a free assessment at the centre for your child. Once you have made contact, we will arrange a day to bring your child in for an assessment. The English and maths diagnostic tests take about 30 - 45 minutes each subject. Following your child's assessment, we will let you know a little more about the FCL programme and how everything works .e.g. routines, costs, feedback etc. Using our initial tests and the trial weeks, we will establish the correct starting point for your child to support and encourage your child's learning, enabling them to gain confidence and fill in gaps they may have. They will then be able to start attending weekly sessions at the centre of your choice; Hereford South, Hereford Belmont or Ledbury. During each weekly session, they will revise any corrections or doubts from the previous week and get introduced to any new concepts for the week ahead. They will be encouraged to attempt tasks independently, all the while having the support of their tutor on hand. Following the class session, students will complete their daily homework to continue practising the skills they have learnt in class. We prioritise regular testing to ensure students are confident with a variety of skills, giving progress tests and parent updates throughout the year. Additionally, we always try to give personal feedback to the family after each session to keep you updated on your child’s progress.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
