Maths and English Tuition at Northampton Kingsthorpe

Welcome to the Northampton Kingsthorpe First Class Learning Centre. We are Andrew & Laura Turpie and together with our team we have been supporting families with both maths and English tuition for more than 10 years.

Students of all ages from both state and independent schools attend our tuition centre at The Pastures Community Centre, Welford Road, Northampton. We cater for learners from age 5 through to GCSE with the pace and content individualised for each student. We aim to make it relaxed and fun, and we have proven that our tuition provides solid foundations for the future.

Our experienced team, who all hold enhanced DBS certificates, support your child's learning in maths, English, or both subjects, in order to help with their school studies, build confidence, raise self-esteem and develop independent learning skills for life. It's about getting ahead and staying ahead.

Our maths and English tuition is tailored to learners' individual needs, so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. At First Class Learning we believe in 1% steps to 100% success, so that our students reach their potential.

How we work

During an initial phone call with Laura or Andrew we will discuss how we can help your child with maths and English. We will then assist your child to complete an assessment to determine which path is most suitable for them. Once we have established your child's needs, we will put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child's learning. If you feel happy with our plan and that we are the best option for you and your child, they will then be able to start attending regular classes at the centre. In these classes they will complete a short piece of work which will be marked, returned and discussed with the tutor, who will give them a detailed programme of homework to be completed before the next class.

Tuition Services

Maths

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

Science

Our GCSE science programme is separated into the three sciences and arranged by topic area. This enables us to focus the work that we do with your child on those topics that they need the most help with with.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence. It also develops a good study habit and independent learning rather than becoming dependent upon others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By bridging gaps and developing confidence, a child’s attitude can become more positive, whilst at the same time our programmes provide them with the skills sets required to transfer through to their school studies.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If a child is worried about coming along to their first session, we will work with parents to settle them in. However, you will not need to stay for long as once a child has experienced the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We aim to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long-term programme, not a ‘quick fix’. However, there are many reasons why you may need to discontinue, so I ask for just 1 month’s notice.
