Maths and English Tuition at Northolt

Welcome to First Class Learning Northolt, where children learn to succeed. We are delighted to support children in the local community, of all ages and abilities, with both maths and English tuition.

Through our structured programmes, we personalise each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding and promote development of existing knowledge. This helps with their schoolwork, builds confidence, and develops independent learning skills.

Our maths and English programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities, so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.

How we work

Our First Class Learning Centre Manager will call you to discuss how we can help your child with maths and English. They will then assist your child to complete an assessment to determine which path is most suitable for them. Once we have established your child's needs, we will put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child's learning. If you feel happy with our plan and that we are the best option for you and your child, they will then be able to start attending regular classes at the centre. In these classes they will complete a short piece of work which will be marked, returned, and discussed with the Centre Manager, who will give them a detailed programme of homework to be completed before the next class.

The First Class Learning maths programme teaches, consolidates and combines skills through its unique spiral structure. Our programme develops numeracy skills - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division - and prepares students to apply those skills to fractions, decimals and percentages. We also cover other areas of the curriculum such as algebra, shape, space and measure and handling data. Our maths programme develops key skills with materials that are ideal for all learners, whether primary or secondary. Topics: introduction to numbers, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and percentages, reasoning, algebra, shape, space and measure, handling data and an introduction to A Level.

The First Class Learning English programme teaches, consolidates and combines skills through its unique spiral structure. From developing phonic knowledge, motor skills and handwriting to reading, comprehension and writing skills, our programme develops key skills with materials that are ideal for all learners, whether primary or secondary. Topics: early fine motor skill development, phonics, handwriting, reading, comprehension, writing skills, planning and independent writing, spelling and extending vocabulary, grammar and punctuation and text structure.

Our comprehensive science programme will develop your child's knowledge and the skills required as part of their school curriculum. The programme has a proven record for improving results and encourages enjoyment in learning.

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By bridging gaps and developing confidence, a child’s attitude can become more positive, whilst at the same time our programmes provide them with the skills sets required to transfer through to their school studies.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If a child is worried about coming along to their first session, we will work with parents to settle them in. However, you will not need to stay for long as once a child has experienced the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We aim to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long-term programme, not a ‘quick fix’. However, there are many reasons why you may need to discontinue, so I ask for just 1 month’s notice.
