Maths and English Tuition in Norwich Taverham

COVID-19 News - In line with recent measures this centre is temporarily closed for face-to-face visits. However, our centres are still supporting remote learning. Our individualised worksheet programmes can be sent to your home, and your child can have help via telephone as required.

COVID-19 UPDATE. We hope to re-open the two Norwich FCL centres during the week beginning 12 April. We expect to operate under the same strict Covid-19 precautions that were used successfully between July and December last year.

We continue to provide practice and support remotely.

Students of all ages attend our Norfolk study centres at Taverham and Cringleford. We cater for learners from pre-school and primary through to GCSE. Some children are gifted, and come to be stretched. Others are struggling, and come for support. Most are average children who could simply do better.

Our staff support your child's learning in maths and/or English, in order to help with his/her school studies, build confidence and develop independent learning skills.

Our English and pure maths tuition programmes are tailored to learners' individual needs so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. At First Class Learning we believe in 1% steps to 100% success. We also provide support and practice with applied maths topics, and where appropriate with school tests - KS1, KS2, or GCSE.

How It Works

On receiving your enquiry, the Centre Manager will call you to discuss how FCL can help your child with maths or English. He will then assist your child to complete an assessment to determine which path is most suitable. Once we have established your child's needs, we will put together a bespoke course of action that will support and encourage your child's learning. If you feel happy with our plan and that we are the best option for you and your child, he/she will then be able to start attending regular classes at the centre (or, during lockdown, remotely). In these classes your child will complete a short piece of work which will be marked, returned and discussed with the Centre Manager, who will provide a detailed programme of homework to be completed before thenext class.

Centre Manager

The two First Class Learning tuition centres in Norfolk are run by Charles Nevick JP BA MSc. The centres are located in Taverham and Cringleford. Charles has run supplementary maths and English tuition centres for over twenty years. The Norfolk FCL centres cover both maths and English from Reception (sometimes pre-school) through to GCSE, i.e. KS1, KS2, KS3, and KS4. Around 140 children are currently enrolled, many doing both subjects. All the staff at the centres have enhanced DBS clearance.

Tuition Services

Maths

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum. We can help your child from the age of 4/5 up to GCSE level.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme. We can help from Reception up to GCSE level.

Student Success

Dear Charles and Lucy It feels like the end of an era for us, now Jonnie is officially at the end of Year 11. We have agreed with him that he can stop at the end of May and I can't thank you both enough for all the help and support you have given to Beth Becca and Jonnie. You took Beth from a struggling maths student in Year 4 to A* at GCSE, Becca you even helped me to get her through Chemistry GCSE and who knows what Jonnie would be like without you!!!! We have loved the ethos of FCL, the support and life lessons you have taught my children, the friendships they have made with you both. We have taken FCL on every holiday we have been on for the last 15 years and I will not miss the marking or the general nagging to make sure it is done on a daily basis! All the very best to you both and a huge thank you. Love Clare

Both our children have attended First Class Learning and I would thoroughly recommend it. The team are dedicated, organised and brilliant at encouraging independent learners. They build confidence in the youngster’s ability and give them the skills to successfully tackle any task in both Maths and English. Keep up the good work

I think that First Class Learning has really helped my children feel more confident with maths at school. The centre at Cringleford has a good learning environment with staff on hand to help with any problems no matter how big or small.

FAQ

How can FCL help with a child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence, we can help to instil a positive attitude – at the same time giving them the skill sets needed to tackle school work.
How does FCL differ from 1:1 tutoring?
FCL provides structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach rather than an hour or more of concentrated teaching. This develops good study habits and encourages independent learning, so children don’t become totally dependent on others teaching them.
If I enrol my child, am I committed to a lengthy contract?
Not at all. Unlike an independent school, where parents normally have to pay for at least a full term in advance, with FCL you only pay for the current month, and can withdraw at two weeks’ notice. That said, FCL is designed as a long-term programme, and indeed there is no such thing as a ‘quick fix’ where maths or English are concerned!
What if a child is either behind or ahead of their school level?
This is one of the great advantages of the FCL system. Children are assessed before enrolling, and then start in our programme at a point where they are already confident. They then work through their own individual programme at their own pace. They don’t have to move forward before understanding the previous work, but equally there is nothing to hold back a gifted child who needs to move on.
