The work booklets are challenging, and the tutors will progress them if things become too easy. I am pleased with the extra practice and challenge that FCL provides and I wish I'd started sending the kids sooner.

Maths and English Tuition at Roundhay

Welcome to First Class Roundhay, where children learn to succeed. We are delighted to support children in the local community, of all ages, abilities with both maths and English tuition.

Through our structured programmes, Lisa individualises each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding and promote development of existing knowledge. This therefore helps with their school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills, something that is extremely important in today's busy classrooms in schools.

Our maths and English programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities, so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, really does make a huge difference.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a convenient time for your child to complete some initial assessments, which are done at the centre. The Centre Manager, Lisa, will discuss how she can help your child with their maths or English. An individualised programme is put together that will support and encourage your child's learning, enabling them to gain confidence and fill in any gaps that they may have. If you feel happy with our plan and that we are the best option for you and your child, they will then be able to start attending regular classes at the centre. Your child can then start completing the daily worksheets with ongoing support from the Centre Manager and staff. Our programme is a partnership between First Class Learning, your child and you as parents, so communication between all is important.

Maths

Our maths programme focuses on building confidence and mastery of key topics. The work is tailored to each individual child's needs, filling in any gaps in knowledge that could be holding your child back at school. Children are able to progress beyond their school level if they are capable of doing so.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt & gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with, but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they will be happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for one month's notice.
