Maths and English Tuition at Scottish Borders Melrose

Welcome to First Class Learning, Scottish Borders. We deliver personalised Maths and English tuition to learners between the ages of 5 and 16 within our local area.

Our Maths and English programmes are structured, flexible and tailored to learners’ individual needs and abilities ensuring that your child will only move on once they are confident with the concept or topic that is being delivered by their tutor. The ‘little and often” approach, with plenty of repetition and practice, helps to consolidate their learning and build their confidence.

Following an initial assessment, we will provide a structured, personalised daily plan of roughly 10-15 minutes of study to be completed at home each day.

Through our specialised programmes we individualise each child’s learning path, which is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding. First Class Learning is unique in the fact that we align ourselves with the national curriculum and ensure that learning is relevant. This helps to support what your child is learning at school, builds their confidence and develops independent learning skills, all of which are extremely important in today’s busy classroom environments.

How we work

The first step is to arrange a convenient time for your child to complete an initial assessment, which is done at our tuition centre in Melrose. On completion of the diagnostic assessment, our centre manager will discuss how best to support and encourage your child’s learning through our individualised Maths and English programmes. Your child will be offered the opportunity to attend our centre once a week for approximately 30 minutes per subject where they will complete a short piece of work which will be marked, returned and discussed with their tutor. A detailed programme of homework will be issued which should take roughly 10 -15 minutes to complete each day. This is to ensure mastery and fluency of what has been studied at each learning step.

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence. It also develops a good study habit and independent learning rather than becoming dependent upon others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By bridging gaps and developing confidence, a child’s attitude can become more positive, whilst at the same time our programmes provide them with the skills sets required to transfer through to their school studies.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If a child is worried about coming along to their first session, we will work with parents to settle them in. However, you will not need to stay for long as once a child has experienced the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We aim to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long-term programme, not a ‘quick fix’. However, there are many reasons why you may need to discontinue, so I ask for just 1 month’s notice.
