Maths and English Tuition in Streatham

Welcome to the Streatham First Class Learning Study Centre. Nivashnie Padayachee, Centre Manager, a qualified and experienced teacher, has been running highly successful after-school maths, English and science classes for over 5 years.

COVID-19 UPDATE:- In line with recent measures this centre is temporarily closed for face-to-face visits. However, we are still operating and are currently offering remote learning. Our worksheets and supporting handbooks can be sent to your home and your child assisted through online sessions with tutors.

Each child is given an initial assessment which Nivashnie uses to prepare a structured and individualised study plan designed to target and fill any existing gaps in their understanding. This study plan helps children to progress with their school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills, something that is extremely important in today's busy classrooms in schools.

Students from ages 5 to 16 are supported with maths and English through the FCL programmes, all of which is based on the National Curriculum. In addition, as a qualified science teacher, Nivashnie also offers science tuition from ages 11 to 16. The study plan includes daily homework of around 15 to 20 minutes per subject per day. 1:1 support is given whenever it is needed by a video call or phone call and weekly results are collected to ensure mastery and fluency.

Our study programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practise, really does make a huge difference.

How It Works

The first step is to arrange a convenient time for your child to complete some initial assessments. These are done via a video call due to the current circumstances and will be done in the study centre when we are able to resume face to face sessions. The Centre Manager, Nivashnie, will discuss the results of the assessments with you and explain how she can help your child with their maths or English. Using the results from the assessments, an individualised programme is put together that will support and encourage your child's learning, enabling them to gain confidence and fill in gaps that they may have. Your child can then start completing the daily worksheets with ongoing support from the Centre Manager whenever it is needed. Our programme is a partnership between First Class Learning, your child and you as parents so communication between all is important. We encourage all parents to mark the homework daily so that corrections can be made as they go through the week and their progress will be seen in the results. If your child has any problems with the work, you can arrange a convenient time to discuss with Nivashnie.

Tuition Services

The First Class Learning maths programme is designed to equip your child with the fundamental skills required for success in school mathematics. Using a range of resources, it covers all the essential areas of the school curriculum.

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

We offer science tuition at Key Stages 3 and 4, including preparing students for GCSE exams. The science programme matches the National Curriculum and is based on our extensive knowledge and experience of teaching secondary school science for over ten years.

Student Success

It’s been such a great experience and great support for my 6 years old daughter. She is not only love her class but it was a great fun for my little one. Staff are really supportive and it was such a great help in her education. I would recommend First Class learning to new parents. And a big thank you to the first class learning team for their amazing job.

My daughter Zayna attends this class and we have found it extraordinary. She found it a great source of normality during lockdown when we were receiving work packs. I would recommend First Class Learning 100%.
Kema Smith
Mrs C and Mrs P, are Fantastic Tutors! My son was tutored in Maths and Science GCSE level. They provided invaluable support and understood my sons weakness, which enabled my son to do better at school which enabled him to get the grades for 6th Form.

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt and gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and helps students to become more independent, taking control of their own learning.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage students to be independent and confident.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
