Maths and English Tuition in Upper Tooting

Welcome to the Upper TootingFirst Class Learning Study Centre. Neela Patel, centre manager, has been running highly successful after-school maths and English classes for over 22 years.

COVID-19 UPDATE:- We continue to offer 1:1 support remotely with video or phone calls and the daily worksheets are posted to you. Due to the Coronavirus, the centre sessions are temporarily closed. However, all students can still make the same progress as if they were coming to the class.

Students of all ages are provided with a structured and individualised daily plan of study of around 10-15 minutes per day. 1:1 support is given whenever it is needed by a video call or phone call and weekly results are collected to ensure mastery and fluency.

The individualised programme is targeted to fill any existing gaps in their understanding. This therefore helps with their school work, builds confidence and develops independent learning skills, something that is extremely important in today's busy classrooms in schools.

Our English and maths programmes are flexible and tailored to learners' individual needs and abilities so students move on only when they are confident with a topic. Regular testing ensures that the best possible progress is made. The 'little and often' approach, with plenty of repetition and practise, really does make a huge difference.

How It Works

Our Centre Manager, Neela, will call you to discuss how we can help your child with maths or English. She will look at any feedback that you have had from school and any observations you may already have about areas of strengths or weaknesses. She then devises a personalised assessment pack and posts it to you. Once you have received this, she will arrange a convenient time for your child to do the assessments via a video call. Once Neela has established your child's needs, she will put together an individualised programme that will support and encourage your child's learning enabling them to gain confidence and fill in gaps that they may have. If you feel happy with the plan, Neela will then post out your child's first homework pack with worksheets and handbooks so that they can get started on their learning journey. She will book a time with you for a regular Centre Manager catch up session, again ideally by video link. During this session Neela will go over any problems in the previous week's work, ensure they understand the work for the week ahead and do spelling tests or progress tests. They can then work through the daily worksheets with ongoing support from the Centre Manager whenever it is needed. Our programme is a partnership between First Class Learning, your child and you as parents. We encourage all parents to mark the homework daily so that corrections can be made as they go through the week and their progress will be seen in the results. If they have any problems with the work, you can call Neela at any time between 09:00 and 18:00, Monday to Friday.

Tuition Services

Maths

Our maths programme focuses on building confidence and mastery of key topics, filling in any gaps in their knowledge that could be holding them back at school. They are able to progress beyond their school level if they are capable of doing so and the work.

English

Our English programme concentrates on reading, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation, creative writing and handwriting. The initial diagnostic testing assesses the child's needs so that we can provide an individualised programme.

Student Success

Neela at First Class Learning is very professional and nurturing. FCL provides good support in enforcing the foundations to learning without putting unnecessary pressure on children. The maths and English papers are always fun to do and the face to face classes provide good help to tackle difficulties. We’ve noticed great improvements in our son as well as success in his examination. Highly recommended.

Neela and her team were dedicated, kind and worked with my son as an individual. Neela ran individual zoom sessions to help him in the areas where he needed work. They are deserving of the great results they have achieved
Victoria Launer
I really can’t recommend Neela highly enough. She has transformed my son’s confidence and ability in preparation for the Wandsworth Test and we have seen an enormous improvement in his results. Neela gets the absolute best out of the children, and they love their session with her. Thank you so much Neela!

FAQ

How does FCL differ to 1:1 tutoring?
FCL offers structure and daily practice, with a ‘little and often’ approach, enabling the child to retain what they have learnt & gain confidence with ease. It also develops good study habits and independent learning so that they don’t become dependent on others teaching them.
How will FCL help with my child’s school work?
By filling in any gaps they may have and developing their confidence we can change their attitude to a positive one and at the same time give them the skill sets needed to carry through to all school work.
Can I sit with my child while they do their work at the centre?
If your child is worried about coming into their first session, parents can come in to begin with but you won’t need to stay for long. Once they see the friendly faces and welcoming atmosphere, they are happy to stay on their own. We like to encourage independent and confident students.
If I join, am I tied into FCL for a set amount of time?
No, not at all. FCL is primarily a long term programme, not a 'quick fix'. However, there are many reasons why you may need to stop, so I just ask for a month's notice.
